Second NZ and AUS International IWB Conference 2010
Theme: Escalating the power of interactive whiteboards
Dates: Thursday 29 - Saturday 31 July 2010
Location: Westlake Girls High School, Auckland New Zealand
Thursday 29 July 2010
10:00 AM - 10:50 AM: Podcasting/Vodcasting. What's it all about?
Podcasting (or Vodcasting; if it includes video as well as audio) lets anybody with a microphone, webcam, a computer and an Internet connection publish broadcasts that can be viewed anywhere in the world. Because the barriers to entry are low, Podcasting is rapidly becoming a popular way for schools to collect digital evidence for assessment, to provide bespoke materials for "on demand" learning, to communicate with parents on a regular basis, and most importantly to offer students a creative means of expression.
True podcasts/vodcasts are free, hosted on the internet and can be automatically downloaded to portable media players, so they can be listened to (or viewed in the case of Vodcasts) whenever it's convenient.
In this session you will discover how to improve your student's speaking and listening, motivation, ICT skills, teamwork and audience appreciation all through true podcasting and vodcasting. Podcasting/Vodcasting can be tailored to any curriculum area and provides the potential to support or extend the work of any student.
Participants will leave this session with helpful resources, software trials, practical ideas and examples that will allow them to begin reaping the many benefits of podcasting/vodcasting.
11:25 PM - 12:15 PM: Create your own Flash eLearning Material
Why isn't there more teacher-developed digital content? Probably because traditional IWB authoring software isn't ideal for producing eLearning material. eLearning material needs to be information rich but must also contain the opportunity for inclusion of student tasks, differentiation and personalisation.
Teachers are turning to flash-based content to address this issue. Highly polished professionally produced digital learning flash objects, such as the Learning Federation Objects require a high level of skill to create. Some teachers have taken it upon themselves to develop flash programming skills and are making some great activities. However, this will only ever be a minority - it's just too technical and time consuming for most.
Using RM's new digital content creator, Fuse Creator, Damien will demonstrate how easy it is to create high quality digital learning objects. Tailor your creations to your student's exact needs. Differentiate based on success or pathways chosen by your students. Or better yet, improve your student's creativity and enable them to create their own flash based objects for sharing with their peers.
Participants will leave this session with helpful resources, software trials, practical ideas and examples that will allow them to begin creating their own digital content.
3:15 PM - 4:10 PM: Classroom Technologies catering for Aural Learners
There is no disputing the benefits of IWBs for students who learn kinaesthetically and visually. The IWB (if used effectively) is great for students who learn better using the sense of touch or the ability to organise information/concepts pictorially. The benefits to students who learn better aurally are however less obvious. The aural learning style is one of the primary learning styles. People who have this kind of learning style work best when they are able to hear directions and speak answers. Students who prefer an aural learning style like to work with sound, rhyme, and music in their learning.
In this hands-on session participants will be introduced to a number of classroom technologies designed to cater for aural learners. Participants will be given the opportunity to road test various sound recording devices, podcasting tools and dance/music activities. Participants will also leave the session with practical examples, simple ideas and practical strategies that can be used to enhance learning for aural learners.
To get the most out of this workshop you will need to bring along your own laptop which is wireless internet enabled.
Saturday 30 July 2010
12:20 PM - 1:10 PM: I didn't know I could do that with my IWB! Easiteach Software (Part 1)
Are you using a Teamboard, Hitachi Starboard, Panaboard, AV Media, Websterboard, EDUSS, 2Touch or IQ Board? If so, then your IWB is supplied free with Easiteach Software.
This hands-on workshop will provide you with handy hints and ideas to unlock the potential of your IWB and assist you in getting started with Easiteach.
Participants will leave the session with helpful resources, practical ideas and examples that you can replicate in their own classroom.

2:15 PM - 3:10 PM: I didn't know I could do that with my IWB! Easiteach Software (Part 2)
This second part of this hands-on workshop will explore how to work interactivity into your IWB lessons. Learn the "tricks" that encourage choice, challenge and feedback in your IWB lessons. Move away from the IWB and encourage a student-centred approach to your IWB use.
Participants will leave the session with helpful resources, practical ideas, examples and many simple ideas they can apply in the classroom the very next day.
To get the most out of this workshop you will need to bring along your own laptop loaded with Easiteach software.
